Fix for email display issues in Internet Explorer / MS Outlook

We have made some adjustments to the LiveWire Campaign email generation code which we think should fix problems some of our clients were experiencing with the display of certain templates in Internet Explorer, where by some / all of the text within the first article section was not visible within Internet Explorer 6 and / or Internet Explorer 7 and / or Outlook.

As we have been unable to reliably replicate this issue in testing, we are relying on you to let us know if you are still experiencing this issue.

If you have experienced this issue in the past, please could you send a campaign to yourself which you know was previously exhibiting this behaviour, and let us know if the issue has now been resolved.

Always use a text alternative to images

Always remember that your recipients may never see the images that you put into your mails. The default setting for Microsoft Outlook 2003 and later is to block all images, and more and more ISPs and email clients (including Gmail and AOL) automatically block images.

Many of the people on your list won’t have adjusted these settings so your images may not be getting through. LiveWire Campaign promotes good email design because the templates encourage you to use text rather than just images for your headlines and sub-headlines.

You’ve probably received emails in your in box that have been made entirely from images. I’m sure they looked great on the designers computer but many will get deleted without users ever clicking on the ‘download images’ button. Without a text based headline to grab attention then the message simply isn’t getting through to the majority of recipients.

More on image resizing in templates

At the request of some of our customers who need more control over the size of the images they use in the LiveWire Campaign templates, we have added a manual override to the automatic image resizing functionality.

This override is not available within the customer administration suite. If you feel that you need more flexibility when adding images please contact support@livewirecampaign.co.uk

Sizing images for templates

As regular users already know we’ve added some code to the templates that will automatically resize images that are too large (physical size) to fit within alloted space. Previously some users were uploading very large images that were effectively breaking the templates.

Campaigns that contain images of a large file size also use up a lot extra system resource when they are sent out. They can also be extremely slow for users to download and this obviously has a negative impact on the effectiveness  of the campaign.

This resizing should only take effect on very large images and if you resize your image first in a software package like Adobe Photoshop you will usually achieve a better result. As a general rule logos and graphics should be saved as Gifs and photographs as Jpegs.

We’ve made some changes to LiveWire

Regular users of LiveWire may not have noticed that we made some functionality changes recently. They’re not obvious, but they are designed to make LiveWire Campaign templates even easier to use.

When you upload a logo or header image to a template that is wider than the space provided it will now automatically resize to the correct width.Images placed in the body of the email are similarly resized. This should save time manually resizing images in Photoshop.

If the image is already smaller than the space provided then it will not be affected.
